Terms of use

The short version: read freely, quote fairly, and treat our pages as information, not advice. Last updated October 26, 2026.

Information, not advice

Everything on this site is general information about spending, psychology and clothing. It is not financial, legal, medical or psychological advice for your situation. Decisions about your money are yours; if you need advice, talk to a qualified professional.

Our calculators

The tools give estimates from the numbers you enter and the assumptions shown on each tool's page. They are there to help you think, not to promise a result. Check anything important before you rely on it.

Using our pages

The writing, illustrations and design of this site belong to us. You are welcome to quote short passages with a link back to the page, to link to any page, and to share pages with anyone. Please do not republish whole pages or large parts of them, or present our work as your own, without written permission.

Diderot's essay itself is in the public domain. Our English translation of it, and the notes alongside it, are our own work and covered by the paragraph above.

Links to other sites

We link to studies, books, public records and other sources so you can check our work. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for what they publish or how they handle your information.

No warranty

We work hard to get things right and fix mistakes when we find them, but the site is provided as it is, without any guarantee that it is complete, current or free of errors. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss that comes from using it.

Changes

We may update these terms. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. Using the site after a change means you accept the new terms.
